Formosa wants to build one of the largest and most polluting plastic plants in the world in St. James Parish. The plant would double the toxic air pollution that St. James residents would be exposed to, increasing the risk of cancer. In the last 10 years alone, the cancer risk from industrial pollution in St. James has increased by 600%.
The plant would turn fracked gas into single-use plastics, emitting millions of pounds of toxic compounds known to cause cancer such as benzene, ethylene oxide, and formaldehyde. Air pollution does not respect district lines — every district and resident will be affected by Formosa’s pollution.
Formosa can’t build in Taiwan, their home country, because of tightening government regulations and their bad track record of pollution. So they’re looking to build in St. James.
Call your council member and voice your concerns about Formosa today. Please urge them to rescind the land use permit for the project. We must keep St. James livable for our children and for future generations to come.
